SPRAY:

Liquid nematicides can be applied as a spray to the surface of the soil. This can be done either preplant or postplant. Many growers have sprayers used to apply herbicides to either side of a tree or vine row and these are typically utilized for postplant nematicide sprays. This sprayer is being used to apply insect parasitic nematodes to turfgrass

Some method must be used to incorporate the product following application. This can either be done via irrigation, or mechanical incorporation equipment. Different types of mechanical incorporators will provide different depths of incorporation. One method to determine the actual depth of incorporation being achieved, is to sprinkle construction glitter (which is often mixed in the material used to texture drywall) on the surface prior to incorporation and excavate the area afterwards.

A Lilliston provides approximately 1 to 2 inches of incorporation, a rotera 3 to 4 and a rototiller 6 to 8.

A research trial conducted for management of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne chitwoodi, in Tulelake, CA illustrates the impact varying the depth of incorporation of a product like Mocap (ethoprop) can have on control. The degree of control achieved increased with the depth of incorporation. The number of blemished tubers was actually significantly higher than the untreated check at the shallowest depth of incorporation. Similar results were obtained with Vydate (oxamyl) .
