Sporozoans

Sporozoan is an informal designation for parasitic protistans that must live part of the time inside specific cells of host species. Many have elaborate life cycles that require different hosts. Many cause serious human disease. All produce a sporozoite stage that is very often transmitted by insects. Many become encysted during some phase of the life cycle.

Malaria, caused by Plasmodium and transmitted by mosquitoes, is a serious worldwide disease. The symptoms have been known for more than 2,000 years. It is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical parts of Africa and kills a million Africans each year. It is caused by four species of Plasmodium transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes.
