Animal-Like Flagellates

In the Phylum Mastigophora, the cells are equipped with one to several whiplike flagella used for movement. All are heterotrophs which are either free-living species in freshwater and marine habitats, or internal parasites.

Trichomonas vaginalis is spread by sexual contact and can cause damage to urinary and reproductive tracts.

The cyst-forming Giardia lamblia typically acquired from infested drinking water such as in mountain streams, usually causes mild diarrhea, but in some persons can cause death.
