Mapping the Human Genome

The Human Genome Initiative in which the entire human genome was mapped was completed in early 2001. It utilized the technology we have been discussing. The information gained will give insights into genetic disorders and ultimately, provide for gene therapy.

Can we bring about beneficial changes without harming ourselves or the environment? Genetically engineered bacteria have "fail-safe" genes included in the DNA which are supposed to be lethal if the bacteria escapes into a non-lab environment.

The general public is concerned about organisms being released that are not "natural" and may endanger human lives.

Gene therapy which is the transfer of normal genes into body cells to correct a genetic defect will become increasingly possible now that the human genome has been mapped.

This tutorial on Sequencing the Genome provides more detail on how the human genome was sequenced.

REVIEW: _____ is the transfer of normal genes into body cells to correct a genetic defect.
