This type of research can be conducted utilizing a combination of greenhouse, microplot and field research.
In research conducted for management of the Columbia root-knot nematode in the Tulelake/Klamath Basin, screening large numbers of potato varieties did not yield any that were nonhosts but did demonstrate that some varieties did not blemish as readily as the standard variety Russet Burbank.
Field screening of varieties of wheat and barley which are common rotation crops also yielded some that supported less reproduction than others. For example, as demonstrated in this graph, steptoe and briggs barley were found to be poorer hosts than fieldwin wheat or crystal barley.
