Introduction to Energy Flow
In this rest of this lecture and in the next, we will discuss what happens to digested food after
it has been absorbed in the intestine, including how
energy is transferred from one substance to another. We will
learn about the forces that cause water and solutes to move
passively across membranes. We will learn to distinguish
between substances that move by simple diffusion and those
that move by facilitated diffusion. We will review the
mechanisms by which substances are moved across
membranes against a concentration gradient. Enzymes control
the metabolic activities of our cells. We will learn what enzymes
do and how they do it.
