Introduction to Energy Flow
In this rest of this lecture and in the next, we will discuss what happens to digested food after 
it has been absorbed in the intestine, including how
energy is transferred from one substance to another.  We will 
learn about the forces that cause water and solutes to move 
passively across membranes. We will learn to distinguish 
between substances that move by simple diffusion and those 
that move by facilitated diffusion.  We will review the 
mechanisms by which substances are moved across 
membranes against a concentration gradient.  Enzymes control 
the metabolic activities of our cells. We will learn what enzymes 
do and how they do it.
