*KOWN TO CAUSE PROBLEMS IN CALIFORNIA

Strawberries are a crop grown in California with heavy preplant usage of the soil fumigant methyl bromide.

Although nematodes in six different genera of plant parasitic nematodes are known to be associated with this crop, only two nematodes are known to cause problems in California. One is the foliar nematode (Aphelenchoides fragariae) and the other is a species of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla).

Both of these nematodes are important from the standpoint of producing clean nursery stock and warrant fumigation of nursery fields.

However, they occur infrequently in fruit production fields. Fumigation of fruit production fields in California is typically conducted for management of plant pathogenic fungi and weeds, rather than for nematodes.
