This two year schedule for preparing a site for fumigation was developed by Ben Lownsbery. It incorporates the basic principles for land preparation discussed earlier and includes an appropriate period of time in fallow or grain to permit deterioration of roots and some decline of nematode populations for which grain is a nonhost.

In reality, in many instances, very little time (often just a few months) is left between removal of one orchard and the planting of another.
