WHAT'S MISSING FROM COST FIGURES?:
- OZONE DEPLETION
- CARCINOGENICITY
- MUTAGENICITY
- GROUND WATER POLLUTION
- AIR POLLUTION
- ACUTE TOXICITY (WORKERS, ENDANGERED SPECIES)
If one compares the cost of utilizing a nematicide in a particular situation versus a nonchemical alternative such as fallow, the cost of utilizing a chemical is often less expensive. The comparative economics of nematode management often works against the implementation of nonchemical techniques. The actual harm to the environment (such as listed above) that many cite as being a consequence of the use of chemicals is not currently a factor in nematicde cost, nor are cost figures readily available.
