FUMIGATING INDIVIDUAL TREE SITES:
- Backhoe site to 5 foot depth.
- Remove roots.
- Cave in sides of hole.
- Use 1 pound of methyl bromide per 100 square feet.
- Bury can or tube 5 feet deep.
- Use a 6 mil tarp (can be reused at other sites).
In some instances, there is a need to replace only a few trees within an orchard. This table summarizes one scheme that has been developed to fumigate individual tree sites which are to be replanted. A backhoe is utilized to excavate the site to a five foot depth to breakup restrictive layers in the soil and facilitate root removal. Since mechanical equipment, itself, tends to compress the soil at the edges of the hole, the sides of the hole should be caved in or disrupted to remove this restriction prior to returning soil to the hole. The plan calls for either burying a one pound can of methyl bromide five feet deep in the hole, or burying the tube from a cylinder at this depth. A tarp is utilized to improve kill in the top few inches of soil.
The large roots visible in this mound of soil prepared for replant fumigation should have been removed during site preparation.
