FUMIGATING INDIVIDUAL TREE SITES:

In some instances, there is a need to replace only a few trees within an orchard. This table summarizes one scheme that has been developed to fumigate individual tree sites which are to be replanted. A backhoe is utilized to excavate the site to a five foot depth to breakup restrictive layers in the soil and facilitate root removal. Since mechanical equipment, itself, tends to compress the soil at the edges of the hole, the sides of the hole should be caved in or disrupted to remove this restriction prior to returning soil to the hole. A tarp is utilized to improve kill in the top few inches of soil.

The large roots visible in this mound of soil prepared for replant fumigation should have been removed during site preparation.
